Hverfjall Crater

아이슬란드의 흐베르프잘(흐베르펠)분화구는 화산폭발시 방출되어 퇴적된 원형의 응회암[凝灰岩]으로 만들어졌고 지름이 1킬로미터에 달한다.

Hverfjall (Hverfell) is a tephra cone or tuff ring volcano in northern Iceland, to the east of Mývatn.

It erupted in 2500 BP in the southern part of the Krafla fissure swarm. The crater is approximately 1 km in diameter. Tephra has been carried from Hverfjall all over the Lake Myvatn area.

The Mackenzie Delta

메켄지 강은 캐나다 노스웨스트 준주의 그레이트슬레이브 호에서 발원하여 북극해로 흘러드는 강이다. 길이 1,738 km로 캐나다에서 가장 긴 강이다. 그레이트슬레이브호로부터는 매켄지산맥의 동쪽 기슭을 흘러서 매켄지저지(低地)를 만들고, 겨울의 동토가 녹아 못과 늪이 수없이 많은 툰드라삼림지역이 펼져진다.

The Mackenzie Delta lies at the end of the Mackenzie River where it enters the Beaufort Sea, approximately 2,200 kilometres northwest of Calgary, Alberta. The Mackenzie Delta basin consists of a Cretaceous to Tertiary rifted continental margin with more than 12 km of sedimentary rock. The basin extends from the head of the modern day Mackenzie Delta to the continental slope in the Beaufort Sea between 69° to 71° N latitude and 127° to 141°W longitude.

Northern Steppe

시베리아 서부, 투르키스탄, 몽골지역의 넓은 초지의 전경과 이 지역(초원)에 사는 사이가 산양이 무리를 지어 이동하는 모습은 실로 장관이다. 겨울에는 큰 무리를 이루지만 여름에는 1∼3마리의 수컷을 중심으로 20∼30마리의 무리를 이룬다.

The Saiga typically stands 0.6-0.8 meters at the shoulder and weighs between 36 and 63 kg. Their lifespan ranges from 6 to 10 years. Males are bigger than females and are the only sex to carry horns. The horns have some value as Chinese traditional medicine and for that reason Saiga are now endangered by poaching. The Saiga is recognizable by an extremely unusual, over-sized, and flexible, nose structure. The nose is supposed to warm up the air in winter and filters out the dust in summer.

Saigas form very large herds that graze in semi-desert steppes eating several species of plants, including some that are poisonous to other animals. They can cover considerable distances and swim across rivers, but they avoid steep or rugged areas. The mating season starts in November, when stags fight for the possession of females. The winner leads a herd of 5-50 females. In springtime the mother gives birth to, in two thirds of all cases two, or in one third, one single foal.

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

세계에서 가장 높은 연안 산맥인 '시에라 네바다 데 산타 마르타 산맥'에는 콜롬비아 최고봉인 '피코 크리스토발 콜론'과 '피코 시몬 볼리바르'와 과히라 사막 그리고 여기저기 산재한 나무와 덤불로 된 관목숲의 반건조 스텝 초원이 있다

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Snowy Mountain Range of Saint Martha) is an isolated mountain range apart from the Andes chain that runs through Colombia. Reaching an altitude of 5,700 metres above sea level just 42 km from the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada is the world's highest coastal range. The Sierra Nevada encompasses about 17,000 km² and serves as the source of 36 rivers. Its range covers the Magdalena Department, Cesar Department and La Guajira Department.

The highest point of the Sierra Nevada group (and Colombia in general) may be either Pico Cristóbal Colón or Pico Simón Bolívar; it has yet to be determined which is higher. SRTM data and local topographic maps show that their true elevations is approximately 5,700 metres, lower than the 5,775 metre elevation that is often quoted. ......

Ellesmere Island

캐나다 노스웨스트 준주 배핀 지역에 있는 퀸엘리자베스 제도에서 가장 큰 섬으로 그린랜드의 북서 연안에 있다. 캐나다의 북극 군도의 섬으로 최고봉이 2,616m인 험준한 산지와 광대한 빙원 그리고 깊이 패인 해안선들로 이루어져 있다.

Ellesmere Island is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Lying within the Canadian Arctic Archipelago it is considered part of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, with Cape Columbia being the most northerly point of land in Canada. It comprises an area of 196,235 square kilometres (75,767 sq mi), making it the world's tenth largest island and Canada's third largest island. The Arctic Cordillera covers much of Ellesmere Island, making it the most mountainous in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The Arctic Willow is the only woody species to grow on Ellesmere Island.
